Acura seeks flagship status for new RLX model | CNET

 by Wayne Cunningham

Acura’s new RLX model features an impressive set of technologies, and a few quirks. (Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)

LOS ANGELES – Once upon a time, Acura pushed the cutting edge of cabin technology, pioneering such features such as navigation and active noise cancellation. But times changed and Acura didn’t, letting other automakers steal the high-tech mantle. Now Acura fights back with the RLX, a new high-end sedan with some odd quirks.

By and large, premium and luxury automakers use rear-wheel-drive for their flagship sedans, an architecture maintained more out of tradition than real necessity. Acura has alway bucked this trend, and continues to do so with the RLX. This model will launch as a front-wheel-drive car sporting a 3.5-liter direct injection engine.

But current standards, that specification is nothing to write home about, as even economy car makers go to direct injection. However, later next year Acura promises a much higher tech drivetrain, this one incorporating a hybrid system and all-wheel-drive. The 3.5-liter V-6 will remain, and get added power from an electric drive system at the rear wheels. As with other hybrids, the battery pack will recapture energy that would have been lost from braking.

The hybrid version should not only add significant power, but Acura estimates it will get 6 mpg better for average fuel economy than the front-wheel-drive V-6 version.

Supercars and attainable performance during day one of SEMA 2012 – CNET

(Credit: Antuan Goodwin/CNET)

If I were a betting man, I’d wager that the SEMA Show in Las Vegas is easily the largest aftermarket car show in the world. Hundreds of customized cars (dinged up daily drivers, glossy show cars, battle scarred race cars, and bench racing dyno queens) crowd the Las Vegas Convention Center every year. It’s nearly impossible to see it all, but that doesn’t stop us from trying. So after filling up an SD card with snapshots, we’ve sorted out the best of day one for your enjoyment.

The Camaros, Corvettes, Sparks, and Sonics that populated Chevrolet’s booth may look extreme, but a closer look at their upgrades list shows a plethora of parts that you can order from your local Chevy dealer. This year’s concepts could be in your garage by this time next year. And if you’re feeling impatient, you can always just buy one of two new production Camaros that debuted as concepts as early as last year.

New 2014 Chevy Corvette begins to take shape ahead of Detroit auto show | AutoWeek

Chevrolet has given us a few looks at the redesigned 2014 Corvette via a teaser video released this week. The one-minute video shows off a clay model, wheels, body panels and some driving footage from the driver’s point of view taken at the test track at General Motors’ Michigan proving grounds.

Why all the fuss? It’s the beginning of a huge promotional push for the new Corvette, designated C7, ahead of the car’s Jan. 13, 2013 unveiling the night before press-preview days start for the Detroit auto show.

We’ve also learned more about the V8 engine powering the 2014 Corvette. GM calls the 6.2-liter V8 engine “LT1,” and says it will use direct gasoline fuel injection to produce at least 450 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque — enough to push the new Corvette from 0-60 mph in under four seconds. The new small-block V8 engine will also use cylinder deactivation, a fuel-saving technology that shuts down four of the Corvette’s eight engine cylinders when demand for power is low. GM claims the 2014 Corvette C7 will be able to achieve 26 mpg on the highway. [Read More]

Porsche 918 spotted in San Francisco | AutoWeek

We’ve seen the upcoming Porsche 918 supercar in a variety of paint schemes, and read about it in action everywhere from Death Valley to the Nürburgring.

2013 Audi A8L 3.0T Quattro – AutoBlog

Finding Replacement For Displacement

2013 Audi A8L 3.0T Quattro

There are few things sweeter than the modern naturally aspirated V8 engine. In the past decade, we’ve been blessed to experience fine examples of free-breathing eight-pot goodness from around the globe, perhaps the best of which being the growling 6.2-liter unit that Mercedes-Benz once used in just about all of its AMG models, and a close runner-up being Audi’s awesome, high-revving 4.2-liter V8.

But those fiery German V8s won’t be around forever. Slowly but surely, Mercedes-Benz is replacing all of its excellent 6.2-liter V8s with lighter, quieter (boo!) twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter engines. And more to the point of this review, Audi’s 4.2-liter V8 that we’ve loved in countless applications is now a rare find. For the 2013 model year, only the R8 supercar and RS5 sport coupe are left with this truly world-class engine, which at one point could be found in the majority of Audi models. It’s a damn shame.

So here we are, the year 2012, and for every 4.2-liter V8 that Ingolstadt will no longer sell you, there is instead a supercharged 3.0-liter V6. We’ve tested it plenty of times in the A6, A7, S4, S5 and Q7, but now Audi’s flagship A8loses its 4.2 in favor of the forced-induction six. Displacement, meet your replacement. But don’t worry – that isn’t all bad.

Car Insurance Claims Adjustor Confessions

August 31, 2012 by admin 1 Comment

Here are some highly valuable tips and advice from an auto insurance claims adjustor that spent four years with a nationally known car insurance company.  Usually, dealing with a claims adjustor is not the result of a positive, uplifting experience you’ve had with your vehicle, but what rubs salt in the wound is that the claims process is probably a very infrequent experience for you and you just don’t know the ropes that would level the playing field. The thought of developing some empathy for a claims adjustor’s daily work routine may seem hard to swallow at first, but if you’re smart you can use it to your advantage.  Bottom line…it’s one of the highest stress jobs anyone could have, and your adjustor it likely carrying a caseload of over 100 open cases, so he has every incentive to handle your expeditiously.

If you’re not happy with the first offer that comes from you adjustor, challenging his evaluation report is one of best ways to get a better offer. [Read More]

Having kids affects, or probably should affect, pretty much every part of your life. Everything from how patient you are to the grade of heroin you use or the car you choose to own and drive. Common wisdom likes to hammer the idea that the only baby-worthy cars are SUVs, Minivans, wagons, and similar vehicles. I don’t think this is always true, and that’s what this new series is all about: finding out how cars work with kids. More »
