VW Emissions Scandal – 11 Million Cars Recalled

September 29, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

11 million vehicles are being recalled in response to the scandal involving rigged emissions software that Volkswagen now needs to refit with full damage control fervor.

Estimated to be a $6.5 billion debacle…news of the recall came from newly appointed Chief Executive Matthias Mueller who replaced the ousted Martin Winterkorn…who is now the subject of fraud allegations.

Deemed the worst business crisis in its 78-year history…Volkswagen is under huge pressure to address details of the scandal..which has wiped away more than one third of its market value, sending ominous ripples throughout the global car market and could easily harm the Germany economy.

“We are facing a long trudge and a lot of hard work,” Mueller told a closed-door gathering of about 1,000 top managers at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters late on Monday.

A huge embarrassment for Germany, the crisis also affects nearly a million auto workers in a highly regarded industry for which VW’s engineering prowess has contributed a major source of export income.

Audi TT Roadster 2016 Reviews, News & Muse

Audi Prices 2016 TT Coupe and Roadster – CarandDriverBlog

by Alexander Stoklosa

Audi Prices 2016 TT Coupe and Roadster
-Audi’s stylish third-generation TT sports car goes on sale soon. How do we know? The company has released pricing for the base TT coupe and convertible, plus the sportier TTS coupe; Audi also has outlined the cars’ standard features, option packages, and more. The TT is all-new for 2016, sharing its MQB underpinnings with a plethora of recent VW Group products, and while it’s plain to see the car is as attractive as ever, we’ve driven all three versions—coupe, roadster, and TTS—and can report that they’re also as fun to drive as ever.

-For 2016, Audi didn’t change much on the TT’s standard-equipment list, adding only its new MMI Touch infotainment controller (with a touch-sensitive pad that can discern finger writing) and LED headlights to an already comprehensive roster. Carryover features include Quattro all-wheel drive, a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, automatic climate control, auto-dimming mirrors, a Homelink garage-door opener, heated 12-way power front seats, a leather and faux-suede-trimmed interior, a flat-bottom steering wheel with shift paddles, 18-inch wheels, and LED taillights. The TTS model adds sports seats with adjustable bolsters; 19-inch wheels; and special engine, exhaust, and suspension tuning.

–Audi Prices 2016 TT Coupe and Roadster
-Despite only minimal content changes, the 2016 TT coupe is $2580 dearer than last year’s model, ringing in at a rich $43,825. The roadster is $3500 more than the coupe, and $3080 more expensive than last year’s topless TT. The mighty TTS’s price barely budges—at $52,825, it’s just $730 pricier than the 2015 TTS. Yet-to-be-priced options include 19-inch wheels with summer tires for the TT, sport seats for the roadster, red brake calipers for the TTS, and a 680-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system.

2016 ABT Audi TT Review – GTSpirit

by Earl Karanja

When we first drove the new Audi TT it did not blow us away. It is trying too hard to please everybody and for those craving the sporty side it left a lot to be desired. Audi tuner ABT Sportsline promised me their package would solve exactly that. Following our recent test drive of the ABT RS6-R the company in Kempten invited us again for another test drive. This time they had prepared a ABT tuned Audi TT for us. Based on the Audi TT 2.0 TFSI ABT created a TTS rival with 310hp and 440Nm of torque. Compared to 230hp and 370Nm for the standard Audi TT 2.0 TFSI.

2016 Audi TT Priced From $43,825 – MotorAuthority

by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

2016 Audi TTAudi’s new TT, the nameplate’s third generation, made its debut more than a year ago. We’ve even had a chance to drive the car and now it’s finally ready for its arrival in U.S. showrooms. Today, Audi confirmed that the new TT, which arrives as a 2016 model, will be priced from $43,825, including a destination charge of…

2016 Audi TT [w/video] – AutoBlog

by Jonathon Ramsey

What came first, the metrosexual or the Audi TT? While it was close, the descriptor-turned-epithet preceded the 1995 concept car by one year. However, they were both notable cultural evolutions and they happened to work together perfectly. Hugh Grant, playing the cad Will Freeman in the 2002 film About a Boy, could not have chosen a better example of character than his silver TT.

A decade later, the original TT was still important enough that when rumors of the third-generation coupe began to surface in late 2012, the most exciting fantasy was that the 2014 coupe might “recapture some of the distinctiveness and impact” of a 16-year-old car (the TT came to market in 1998). Even speculation by dedicated Audi observers thought the brand would do something novel, even if not mimicry. The obvious takeaway: no one was going to be lighting any candles for the departed second generation. All of that is why when the first leaked image slipped onto the Internet, people began to get suspicious. When the third generation took the stage at the Geneva Motor Show, we could almost hear the digital deflation over the Ethernet, our poll results notwithstanding.

Yet it’s still the TT, and in spite of having seen its interior and virtual cockpit and clocked its specs, we couldn’t judge it before heading to Marbella, Spain to drive it. What we found out was while it’s better than the second generation, it’s still very much a TT.

2016 Audi TT/TTS lineup makes U.S. debut – KelleyBlueBook

The all-new 2016 Audi TT/TTS Coupe and TT Roadster, previously launched in Europe, are making their debut in U.S. trim at Los Angeles. As documented in our earlier coverage, the all-new Gen III TT set remains aluminum intensive but now is based on the Volkswagen Group’s latest MQB modular platform that trims about 100 pounds from the base car’s curb weight. The 2016 iteration is wrapped in bolder bodywork set off with standard LED lamps that give it a new look.  A fully revised suspension – including the Magnetic Ride dampers that are standard on the hotter TTS Coupe – endow all versions with better dynamics.

Sans top and two seats, Audi TT roadster equals coupe handling – CNET

by Wayne Cunningham
Audi launches the TT roadster and coupe simultaneously, the former offering open air driving and excellent handling, but less passenger and cargo room.

Compared to its coupe sibling, the 2016 Audi TT roadster loses two seats and reduces luggage room, but in this case, less feels like more as the roadster complements similarly excellent handling with the glory of an open sky overhead.

Vinli Morphs Your Car Into a Connected Car

June 10, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Do the big car makers have you convinced that to enjoy all the benefits of a “connected” car…you need to run down to the nearest showroom and take the plunge on a brand new vehicle? Vinli wants you to know it’s all hogwash…and that for $99, you can:

“Instantly upgrade any car making it smarter, less expensive, more efficient, safer, and fun.”

Are you an “early adopter”?   This aftermarket adapter may one day be swallowed up by the big car makers and built into new cars in the near future. Starting in August (2015) however, it will be available to the general public in the form of a little black box that plugs into your car’s dashboard…for a mere $99.

Why would you want Vinli?  The primary reason is that Vinli downloads the On Board Diagnostic System Information (OBD-II) from the vehicle it’s plugged into…and sends that data to a variety of apps on your smartphone…via Bluetooth.  Another huge reason…it’s “the only connected-car device” that includes 4G LTE Internet.  And as powerful sidekicks to your new found wireless capabilities…a growing variety of apps to help do everything from helping keep your teen drivers safe…to diagnosing car problems before they become problems…to helping follow and track down your vehicle, if it ever gets stolen.

Twenty (20) apps will be plug n play, ready to go, out of the box…when Vinli hits the market in August.  Among them, services like:

  • eCall – If you’re ever in an accident…notify your loved ones by SMS or Voice.
  • My Service Shop – Always forgetting scheduled car maintenance? Your friendly neighborhood mechanic is a click away.
  • Roadside Assistance – Dead battery? Flat tire? Out of gas? Lost & need directions? Vinli helps get you back on track.

Hybrids Get More Power, Better Mileage with Cheaper Batteries

March 31, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

A low-cost next generation alternative of hybrid car batteries will benefit consumers and car makers by combining electric and gasoline power in more efficient and cost effective ways.

These emerging batteries could help the cost of lithium ion cell get leveraged by dropping costs per kilowatt-hour from about $500…down to $175 in the next five years say industy analysts.

The new technology, named microhybrid switches, is the same concept that turn hybrid engines on & off while sitting at stoplight and intersections for example.  It’s been around for years now, but the latest improvement adds a tweak that allows the hybrid battery to store extra energy that’s generated by hitting the brakes to make the car come to a stop.  That extra energy savings turns into gasoline savings…which doubles the fuel savings of traditional hybrid vehicles.

“Automakers want to squeeze as much efficiency as possible out of the internal combustion engine,” said MaryAnn Wright, a vice president at Johnson Controls, which makes both lithium ion and lead-acid batteries. “These technologies bolted together will cost a fraction of electric vehicles.”

Safe Cars Interest is Response to Record Recalls

January 31, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

The number of vehicles ranked highest for keeping occupants alive and safe in a crash rose 82% for 2015 models, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety‘s latest report released 12/23/14.  The positive increase came in spite of more stringent tests…with Toyota Motor Corp. claiming the top spot on the list with the most safe models.

But the IIHS good news about more safe vehicles has been overshadowed by the number of 2014 U.S. Recalls this year…reaching over 60 million vehicles…almost twice the previous recall record.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been busy issuing fines and subpoenas in response to decade old defects linked to injuries and deaths.

2014 Record Recalls:

  1. General Motors – nearly 27 million vehicles recalled in 2014…a record for any single automaker.  Defective small car ignition switches have been linked to over 58 injuries and 42 deaths.
  2. Honda Motor Co. –  5.4 million vehicles recalled to replace Takata Corp. airbags.  Unstable propellant in Takata airbag inflators can cause them to explode with too forcefully…throwing shrapnel throughout the car in a crash situation.  The shrapnel issue is related to at least 100 injuries and four deaths in the U.S.

Two of the top IIHS concerns for future vehicles is focusing on pressuring automakers to develop and implement technology that automatically applies braking without driver control to avoid a crash…and designing and constructing stronger bodies for certain kinds of frontal crashes.

The Chrysler 200 sedan from FCA US LLC was the only model from a traditional U.S. brand to be included among the safest 33 vehicles…called “Top Safety Pick+“.  Toyota dominated that group with eight models winning a spot in the coveted top 33.
