Flashing headlights is your Constitutionally protected right – CNET

(Credit: Mercedes)

Flashing your high beams to communicate with other drivers was ruled Constitutionally protected speech.

No good deed goes unpunished, as they say. A man who tried to warn others of a speed trap by flashing his vehicle’s headlights at motorists was ticketed by police. But a Florida judge ruled this week that flashing headlights is free speech protected by the First Amendment, according to an article in the Orlando Sentinel.

Ryan Kintner was ticketed last year for warning motorists of a speed trap waiting for them down the road. The Lake Mary, Fla., resident was at home when he noticed a police officer with a radar gun near his house, and decided to help out unsuspecting motorists by parking farther up the street from the officer and flashing his lights at oncoming traffic to warn drivers. The police officer instead ticketed Kintner, citing a law that prohibits the flashing of aftermarket emergency lights.

However, Kintner fought the ticket, and brought a lawsuit against the Seminole County Sheriff’s office to stop them from using this law to “silence” motorists. He argued that the officers are misapplying that law, which is intended to prevent motorists from installing aftermarket emergency lights and impersonating emergency v… [Read more]

Honda Tech Could Reduce Stop-and-Go Traffic – CNET

(Credit: Honda)

Honda’s traffic congestion technology could prevent stop-and-go traffic.

Hitting the brakes on the freeway could cause a chain reaction of braking behind you, creating yet another traffic jam during the evening commute. But the traffic condition commonly referred to as stop-and-go traffic could be eased by new driving monitoring technology from Honda.

Honda, in conjunction with the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo, developed technology that detects potential traffic congestion caused by a vehicle’s acceleration and deceleration. The system identifies congestion on the road and coaches the driver with alerts and displays to respond to the road conditions in a way that won’t cause a backup. For example, rather than braking when the vehicle ahead brakes, the driver could create more distance between the two vehicles and potentially absorb the slight change in speed.

Test results have demonstrated that such a system could increase the average driving speed by approximately 23 percent. In addition to saving time, the technology can also save drivers gas money. By eliminating the need to start and stop during traffic, the technology improves fuel consumption by approximately 8 percent.

For vehicles equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, the traffic feature could theoretically be connected to a cloud-based system to sync ve… [Read more]

Chevy adds GogoLink navigation to list of MyLink apps – CNET

(Credit: GM)

The GogoLink navigation app will be available on the Chevy Sonic and Spark.

Pandora has become the app most widely integrated with cars, but while customized streaming-music channels are nice, navigation is much more useful. Chevy obliges by adding the GogoLink navigation app to its MyLink connectivity system.

GogoLink will be available late this year in Chevy Sonic and Spark models equipped with the MyLink option. Including it in these cars lets Chevy offer navigation at the bottom of its model lineup.

MyLink’s apps are embedded in the car, and the driver’s smartphone gets used as the data conduit.

GogoLink, based on the GogoLive navigation app, not only shows point-to-point … [Read more]

Bang & Olufsen makes beautiful music at Geneva auto show – CNET

(Credit: Wayne Cunningham/CNET)

The Aston Martin DBS comes standard with a Bang & Olufsen audio system developed especially for the car.

Bjarne Sorenson, Bang & Olufsen’s Automotive Technology Director, is a very lucky guy. As we sat in the Aston Martin DBS listening to music, he described the approval process for the company’s recent work with BMW. As BMW was putting the final touches on its new 6-series, Sorenson got to spend a few days driving the Autobahn at 100 mph in the car, making sure the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system produced the same perfect sound at high speeds as it did at a stop.

Sorenson has also been lucky in launching Bang & Olufsen’s automotive practice about eight years ago, as automakers spent the last decade scrambling to sign deals for branded audio systems in their cars. His practice area has grown to a significant part of Bang & Olufsen’s business, with placement in cars from Aston Martin, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW.

Hidden under the cargo floor of the Audi A3 is this big Bang & Olufsen subwoofer.

At the Geneva show, Sorenson gave me a tour of the systems in thre… [Read more]

Europe’s carmakers left behind as economy steadies

Shrinking household incomes and rising fuel prices that risk sapping the lifeblood from a nascent recovery gave Europe’s car executives little reason for cheer at the Geneva auto show, which usually marks a crucial spring thaw in industry sales.

Audi Testing the Electric Car Market – CNET

(Credit: Audi)

The all-electric Audi A3 E-tron.

To ready its upcoming fleet of plug-in and electric vehicles for the U.S. market, Audi announced, the company will begin testing a small fleet of electric A3 hatchbacks in different regions throughout the country.

The Audi A3 E-tron has 199 lb-ft torque, a battery range of approximately 90 miles, and a top speed of 90 mph. It looks nearly identical to its conventional gasoline-powered A3 counterpart, but under the hood you’ll find an electric motor instead of a 2-liter gasoline or diesel engine. Powering the vehicle is a 26kWh lithium ion battery housed underneath the car, which means the battery pack won’t occupy any of the five-seater’s cargo space.
