Honda has enjoyed several enduring positive reputations over the years…and continues making news this month on the safety and technology fronts.

Safety First:

Days after being awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety‘s top safety designation for “good performance in all five IIHS crash evaluations” for its newly upgraded 2014 Odyssey minivan, Honda announced a new technology in the making that focuses on people not behind the steering wheel.

Despite state laws giving pedestrians the ultimate right-of-way, both pedestrians and motorcycles are often highly vulnerable when pitted against drivers of passenger vehicles. Honda’s new Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) technology and Vehicle-to-Motorcycle (V2M) technology may swing the safety odds more positively for all potential parties involved.

Though still in the research phase,  the basis for both the V2P and V2M technologies involves simply letting vehicles communicate with potential accident targets like pedestrians and motorcyclists wirelessly.  Honda’s system uses something they call Dedicated Short-Range Communications…which has been allocated a dedicated band of wireless spectrum by the FCC…specifically for automotive use.
