Beating the High Cost of Replacement Car Keys

June 30, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

The Good News: Advanced Key Technology has dramatically increased vehicle safety…making it much more difficult for thieves to steal your car.
The Bad News: Losing your car keys costs much more for vehicles made after the mid 1990’s

It’s no longer a matter of  going to a locksmith or hardware store for a $5 quick fix.  Going to car dealer starts the replacement process with labor rates easily hitting $100 an hour.   But it’s bound to happen sooner or later. When it does, you’ll likely find yourself in one of these 5 vehicle key categories:

  1. Basic Keys & Fob:  Until the mid-to late-1990s…a basic key was the most common and had no unique technology security features.  Copy these keys is easy for your local hardware store or a locksmith.  A few buck and you’re out the door.   It’s not necessary to even concern your self with a car dealership would be to get the automaker’s branding on the head of the key.  An electronic key fob (aka: remote or transmitter) is the next step in complexity and is a vital part of the key set. A dealership may charge anywhere from $50-$90 (depending on it sophistication and maker). But…all fobs need to be programmed.  That can range from “free” …to a half hour or more of labor at a car dealer.  Sometimes you can find the programming information online…sometimes the vehicle’s owners manual tells you how to do it.  Locksmiths also usually offer aftermarket fobs…as a (usually) cheaper alternative to the dealer.
  2. Transponder Keys: The next step in key technology evolution (post mid-late 1990s)…car makers began inserting a transponder chip in the plastic key head.  It sends a signal to the ignition’s “immobilizer”.  If the immobilizer doesn’t receive the correct unique signal (i.e. because the wrong key is in the ignition) …no go, no start.  The shank of a transponder key is either: a) a basic key …or b) a laser-cut key.  Regardless…the chip in the transponder key must be programmed before it’s able to start your vehicle.  Dealerships have the necessary equipment for programming the key’s chip…again, anywhere from “free” to an hour of labor charges.  Usually, locksmiths also have the chip programming equipment.   If the transponder key & fob are an all-in-one unit… the price of the replacement key goes up and it becomes more difficult to avoid getting it anywhere other than a dealership.  $200+ for the key & fob combo is not uncommon.  Do you frequently lock your keys inside or in the trunk?  One potential low-cost alternative for you is to order a basic key without the transponder.  It will do everything but start the engine…but is a cheap backup for retrieving keys locked inside the vehicle.  Saving money on the programming costs of having a third spare key is also possible.  With two keys already in your possession…several carmakers allow you to program a third key on your own. First, a locksmith must cut this “emergency” key.  Next…follow the procedure for programming it…often found in your owner’s manual…or instructions can also often be found online.  Try this search term: “How to program a (insert your year, make, model) key”. [Also, watch the video above].
  3. Laser-Cut Keys: these differ from a basic key in that the shank is slightly thicker and has fewer carved-out grooves. Often nicknamed “sidewinder keys” because of the unique winding cut on the shank. Equipment necessary for cutting these keys is considerably more expensive than for cutting basic keys…and consequently are more difficult to find at locksmiths and hardware stores.  The transponder chip is also a feature of laser-cut keys…and usually need to be programmed at the dealership or by a locksmith that is certified by the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) preferably.  Again, a thorough online search is always advisable.

Toyota Bets on Hydrogen Fuel Cells Over Batteries

May 30, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

You don’t need to be a Silicon Valley area resident to be familiar with Tesla Motors…the Wall Street darling that won Motor Trend’s prestigious 2013 Car of the Year award…been sending rockets into space and getting featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes news show.  In addition to taking over the old Fremont, CA NUMI plant, once occupied by Toyota…Tesla and Toyota recently had an EV battery deal to supply the RAV4 EV.

However Toyota decided to end its R&D deal with Tesla…veering sharply from a 20-year attempt to create a viable battery-electric vehicle…and pursue the hydrogen fuel cell path. Why? “Because hydrogen fuel cells are cheaper on a cost-per-vehicle basis and are “more efficient on a well-to-wheel basis.  Lastly, because Toyota sees battery-electric vehicles as viable for only  “short-range vehicles that take you that extra mile”…for example, “from the office to the train, or home to the train, as well as usage within large [corporate] campus environments.

However, “for long-range travel primary vehicles, we feel there are better alternatives, such as hybrids and plug-in hybrids, and tomorrow with fuel cells,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota’s North American region in an interview after Fortune magazine’s Brainstorm Green conference.

In fact, both Toyota and Honda are planning to bring fuel cell vehicles to market in 2015…eventually aiming to make the cars available for less than $50,000 at some point in the future.

Family Cars 2014 – Top 10 Picks

April 6, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Today’s concept of what defines a modern family has changed and blurred so much that delineating target markets for family vehicles has become a bit more challenging.  But where there’s a profit motive, there’s a way! …and the big car makers are hardly short on ideas.  Still…minivans, SUVs and family sedans probably cover a large demographic majority of multiple person families.  So here’s a group of highly likely choices from Kelly Blue Book…a highly trusted vehicle information resource…for top pics on the best 2014 Family Cars.

KBB produces Expert Ratings on more than 300 vehicles of all types every year…and narrowed that list down to 21 vehicles from several classes they believe  to be first round front runners for top-notch family fun-mobiles.  Each of the nine KBB editors received a list of candidates, then individually voted for up to 20 of them, and they were given the opportunity to nominate any additional vehicles that they felt should be included.  The responses were culled and the votes tallied…producing the list of vehicles that received four or more votes were invited to participate in our driving-and-usability test.  Mainstream models from each manufacturer were requested for the lab & road tests.  The challenge was being careful not to give favoritism to heavily equipped vehicles, because KBB wanted the test to be as “real-world” representative as possible.

What emerged is a list of seven sedans, six small SUVs, five midsize SUVs, two minivans, and one hybrid wagon, from a total of 11 different brands. With one representative vehicle from the list of 21 on site at the Kelley Blue Book offices…their staff installed and uninstalled car seats, loaded up the cargo area with various objects, and even brought their kids down to climb in and out, and maybe test out the rear-seat entertainment. When all was said and done…and results tallied…the cream of the crop rose to the top.

Here’s the resulting 10 Best Family Cars of 2014…plus two more:)

Audi A3 for 2015 – News & Reviews

March 10, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

A small family car produced by the German automaker Audi since 1996, the Audi A3 is a third-generation model.  The first two generations of A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, which they share with several other models such as the Audi TT, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Caddy and Volkswagen Touran and others.  The third-generation A3 uses the Volkswagen Group MQB platform…which is the company’s strategy for shared modular construction of its transverse, front-engined, front-wheel drive automobiles.  We’re not Audi A3 history buffs necessarily…but the more exciting news is the A3 for 2015.  Here’s a collection of the best reviews, first looks and test drives.

Video First Look: 2015 Audi A3 – Kelley Blue Book

Audi was kind enough to give us early access to their new 2015 A3 sedan. We’ll have a full review coming soon but for now…

2015 Audi A3 2.0T Quattro EPA Ratings Out, Gets 33-mpg Highway – Car and Driver Blog

As compact German sports sedans go, the 2015 Audi A3 2.0T Quattro has adequate, but not stellar, fuel economy. The EPA rates the 2.0T with Quattro all-wheel drive—for now, the top powertrain until the hot-rod version S3 arrives—at 24-mpg city and 33-mpg highway.

2015 Audi A3 TDI sedan

The A3 comes with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic on all trim levels. All-wheel drive comes standard on models with the 220-hp, 2.0-liter turbo four and is unavailable on models with the 170-hp, 1.8-liter turbo four. We expect to see a new 150-hp, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder to be offered in the A3 as well, for the fans of oil burners out there.

2015 Audi S3 First Drive – MotorAuthority

The S3 comes from the new A3 family of cars, which land ashore next year in the U.S. in all sorts of body styles. There’s the sedan, an Avant wagon, a pretty convertible, and a plug-in hybrid hatchback all to come–and we’ll throw in the compact Q3 crossover, which isn’t as precisely related to the others, but close enough for short attention spans. Audi’s new compact cars will go on sale about six months after rival Mercedes-Benz launches its new 2014 CLA 250 compact four-door and its 355-hp CLA 45 AMG companion piece and the GLA crossover, which it totally lumps together with the others.

New 2015 Audi A3 boasts 4G connected tech – CNET

2015 Audi A3

LOS ANGELES — Mansions, yachts, limousines: luxury often equates to large, but Audi has other things in mind with its new A3 model. The smallest car in its US lineup, the all-new 2015 A3 sedan gets features found on Audi’s flagship sedan, the A8.

US buyers may be a little confused by the new A3, which has gone from a wagon body style to a sedan, and skipped a model year in the process. Audi intended to market a sedan here, a more popular body style, but development of the three- and five-door hatchbacks took precedence in other markets.

The wait seems to be worth it, as the new A3 packs some of Audi’s most cutting-edge tech.

2015 Audi A3 gets augmented reality app in place of owners manual [w/video] – Autoblog

There have been a few, seemingly half-hearted, attempts at reinventing the owner’s manual – that thick stack of bone-dry information that you only look at if you’re well and truly stumped. Hyundai tried swapping in iPads with the Equus, which didn’t really take, while Chrysler switched its owner’s manuals to digital form in 2010. Chrysler subsidiary Dodge even released a smart phone app that included all the info contained in the paper manual.

Audi, though, may have taken things to their logical conclusion – augmented reality. While it’ll likely be more practical once Google Glass and other wearable tech is adopted on a wide scale, augmented reality allows users to project information on scenes, usually through a phones camera, which is how Audi does it.

Called eKurzinfo, the app looks through your phones camera to identify and explain different parts of the car. According to Metaio, the app’s developer, the app recognizes 300 different parts of the car.

Seniors Vehicles – 2014 Best Bets

January 30, 2014 by admin

34 million U.S. drivers were age 65 or older as of 2010. But that number is expected to grow to 40 million by 2020, according to info provided by the American Automobile Association (AAA).  Finding vehicles with well designed automotive features that support the physical changes brought on by aging is a high priority for seniors.   AAA has created a simple, yet useful tool to aid in that process.

While some older drivers seem to be relatively unscathed by physical limitations from aging…many aren’t so lucky.   Ailments and conditions that can make driving anywhere from uncomfortable to dangerous seem to be playing a larger design factor in newer vehicles…features targeted at helping senior to compensate for many of the physical changes that can come with aging.

  • Lower-body mobility issues – such as limited knee range and leg pain are common for those over 55. Features such as adjustable power seats, a low door threshold and adjustable foot pedals can help lessen or eliminate discomfort.
  • Upper-body mobility issues – that can cause pain or stiffness in the back, neck, arms or shoulders. Adjustable lumbar support and heated seats can help soothe aching backs and shoulders. Large wide-angle mirrors and large rear windows aid visibility, and can work with a rear backup camera, active parallel-park assistance, and front and rear parking sensors to help senior drivers maneuver their vehicles without engaging in too much of the upper-body twisting and turning that can be painful for those with stiffness in the neck or shoulders.
  • Shorter stature & Weight Gain – People start losing about 1/2 inch in height every 10 years, according to Harvard Medical School studies.  Weight gain is another common issue. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one-third of seniors aged 65 and older wrestle with obesity. Features such as adjustable seats, adjustable foot pedals and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel can help both shorter and overweight drivers to find safe and supportive seating positions.
  • Arthritis – Stiff Fingers – Compromised fine-motor skills –  Thicker steering wheels are easier for arthritic hands to grasp, and keyless entry and ignition helps these drivers avoid the potentially painful hand movements involved in inserting and twisting a key. Other user-friendly features for arthritic drivers include a heated power mirror and larger dashboard controls. In SUVs and crossovers, an automatic tailgate closer can be a real bonus for drivers with arthritis.
  • Vision – Difficulty with reading information displayed on their vehicles’ instrument panels. Their eyes may also recover more slowly from glare. Features such as extendable sun visors, larger audio and climate controls, auto-dimming low-glare mirrors and a high-contrast instrument panel can help seniors who face these challenges behind the wheel.

Here are 10 vehicles hand picked by Edmunds.com that offer features designed to support drivers  that face the above challenges….from sedans to SUVs, and ranging in price tag from upper end luxury models to the very affordable.
